A little about the history of Junction City

Junction City was founded in 1858 and the name is based on its location at the confluence of the Smoky Hill and Republican Rivers that form the Kansas River. The city grew as a trading center for Fort Riley, the US military base that was established in 1853. It served as the headquarters of Lieutenant Colonel George a Custer and the 7th Cavalry. Fort Riley is also the site of the first territorial capital building in Kansas that was built in 1855 and is a museum today.

Junction City was one of the first communities in Kansas to have a kindergarten in 1927. Fort Riley's first name was camp center based on the idea that it was the geographic center of the country. Saint Mary's Chapel at Fort Riley was the first stone church in Kansas and was originally built by the Episcopalians in the mid-1850s. Today some of the major employers include Cloud County Community College, Eagle Railcar Services, Footlocker Corporate Services Center and, of course, Fort Riley and nearby K-State University.
